Etymology

From пе́ред (péred) +‎ -о́к (-ók), attested no later than 1733 (note that Middle Russian передъ (pered, front side of a single-axle carriage) is attested in 16th c.). Doublet of предок (predok), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
