From Proto-Finno-Ugric *repä-ćɜ or *repäs (fox). Cognates include Finnish repo, Estonian repane, Hungarian ravasz. Ultimately borrowed from Indo-Iranian; compare Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬞𐬌 (raopi).
