Etymology
From Proto-Samic *sealkē, Proto-Finnic *selkä, from Proto-Finno-Permic *śelkä. Doublet of [script needed] (tšelk). Related to Finnish selkä and Eastern Mari шӹлӹж (šÿlÿž, “area of the sacrum”).
Compare Northern Sami sealgi, Skolt Sami seä´lǧǧ and Kildin Sami се̄лльк (sjēll’k).
