Often thought to come from с- (s-) +‎ моро́зить (morózitʹ, “to freeze”), with the meaning "to make someone freeze from the stupid words spoken".

Alternatively, derived from с- (s-) + μωρός (mōrós, “stupid”) (cf. moron) + -ить (-itʹ) in seminarian argot.
