Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pěvati. Cognate with Russian пева́ть (pevátʹ) and Ukrainian співа́ти (spiváty).

(intransitive) to sing (form musical sounds with the voice, perform vocal works)
(intransitive, of birds) to cluck, whistle
