Borrowed from Russian сфи́нкс (sfínks), from Ancient Greek Σφίγξ (Sphínx), perhaps either from σφίγγω (sphíngō, to squeeze, to strangle) (whence also sphincter), of Pre-Greek origin, or from Egyptian



(šzp-ꜥnḫ, divine image), literally "living image".
