съюз

Bulgarian

Etymology

Borrowed from Russian сою́з (sojúz), itself borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съѭзъ (sŷjǫzŭ) - an alternative form of Old Church Slavonic съвѫзъ (sŭvǫzŭ). Cognate with the native dialectal terms Bulgarian въз m (vǎz), възе n (vǎze, binder, fastener), from Proto-Slavic *ǫzъ (bond, tie).

The secondary meaning conjunction is a calque of Latin coniūnctiō.
