From Proto-Mordvinic *uśkə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Permic *waśke ~ *wäśkä (“some kind of metal; copper”). Cognate with Finnish vaski (“copper”), Hungarian vas (“iron”), Eastern Khanty вӑӽ (wăḥ, “iron”).
