Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *jäŕ-kə, from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *jäwrä, borrowed either from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jaurā (compare Lithuanian jáura (“marshland, bog”)) or from earlier Proto-Indo-European *yewHr-. Cognates include Finnish järvi, Northern Sami jávri, Eastern Mari ер (jer).
