эрямс

Erzya

Alternative forms

  • ӓрямс (äŕams)

Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *eŕams, possibly inherited from Proto-Uralic *elä- (to live), but both the initial vowel /e/ and the consonant /r/ are irregular. Keresztes suggests an irregular development due to avoidance of homonymy with the prohibitive auxiliary Erzya иля (iľa, don't). Compare also Estonian ära (from Proto-Finnic *älä-) with the similar phonetic shift *l > r.

Alternatively, related to Erzya эрзя (erźa), which may derive from *ürkä ~ *irkä (man, son, boy), or, less likely, related to Proto-Samic *orōtēk (to be; to live, reside).
