Inherited from Old East Slavic ямьщикъ (jamĭščikŭ), from Turkic, ultimately from Middle Mongol ᠵᠠᠮᠴᠢ (ǰamči). By surface analysis, ям (jam) + -шчык (-ščyk). Cognate with Russian ямщи́к (jamščík).
