Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *jovtams, inherited from Proto-Uralic *jupta- (to tell). Cognate with Finnish juttu (talk; thing; affair), jutella (to chat), Estonian ütlema (to say; pronounce), Livonian jutlõ.
