From Proto-Mordvinic *jovtams, inherited from Proto-Uralic *jupta- (“to tell”). Cognate with Finnish juttu (“talk; thing; affair”), jutella (“to chat”), Estonian ütlema (“to say; pronounce”), Livonian jutlõ.

     Jovtaś isťažo tenst pritča-jak: vecevi-li sokornëń sokorś? aprïť-li sïń kavtnest latks?

     He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?”
