Etymology

Formed according to the euphemistic model having the first sound or syllable from the original word (in this case, ёб твою мать (job tvoju matʹ)), but ending it with an unexpected (in this case, phonetically similar) continuation, similarly as ёлки-па́лки (jólki-pálki), ёксель-мо́ксель (jókselʹ-mókselʹ), ёпрст (jopereseté), ёклмн (jokelemené) and ёшкин кот (jóškin kot).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈjɵ mɐˈjɵ]

Interjection

ё-моё • (jo-mojó)

  1. (minced oath, colloquial) damn, bloody hell (an expression of disappointment or surprise)
    Ё-моё, — говори́л он себе́ негро́мко, изумлённый, — да она́ про́сто краса́вица!
Jo-mojó, — govoríl on sebé negrómko, izumljónnyj, — da oná prósto krasávica!
"Damn!", he said to himself softly, amazed, "she’s simply beautiful!"
