Usage notes
In Classical Persian, both باز (bâz) and واز (vâz), variants of the same etymon, were in use. The former is now more common in the Iranian standard language and the latter in the Afghani standard, although the contracted وا (vâ) is also common in colloquial Iranian speech. Tajik usually uses the unrelated кушода (kušoda), equivalent to Iranian گشوده (gošude), which is now archaic both in Iranian and Afghani usage and mainly reserved for poetry.

Etymology 2
From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾpʾc), 𐫀𐫁𐫀𐫝 (ʾbʾc /abāz/, “back, again, re-”), from Proto-Iranian *apāča- (“back”), derived from Proto-Iranian *apānk- (“behind”), from Proto-Iranian *Hápa (“off, away”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hápa (“off, away”).[2]
Less likely, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰe (instrumental particle) + *-ǵʰs (“out”), and cognate with Sanskrit बहिस् (bahis, “out, aside from”).[3]
