From Ge'ez ግልባብ (gəlbab, “covering, veil, wrapper”) from ገልበበ (gälbäbä, “to cover, to veil, to wrap, to envelop”), whereas the verbs in the Arabic root ج ل ب ب (j l b b) are denominal.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /d͡ʒil.baːb/
Noun
جِلْبَاب • (jilbāb) m (plural جَلَابِيب (jalābīb))
- a long, loose-fitting outer garment; a robe
- (obsolete) a woman's long headcloth; a headscarf
- 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 33:59:
- يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُل لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ المُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلابِيبِهِنَّ ذٰلِكَ أَدْنَى أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا
- yā ʔayyuhā n-nabiyyu qul liʔazwājika wabanātika wanisāʔi l-muʔminīna yudnīna ʕalayhinna min jalābībihinna ḏālika ʔadnā ʔan yuʕrafna falā yuʔḏayna wakāna l-lahu ḡafūran raḥīman
- O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to have hanging-down headscarves. Through this, it is more attainable for them to be recognized, for them not to be harmed. ʾAllāh is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
