Etymology 2

Most likely from Old South Arabian 𐩭𐩭 (ḫḫ) from which also Ge'ez ኆኅት (ḫoḫət, door, gate, wall opening), from which Amharic ኆኅት (ḫoḫət, space between letters); also found in Shehri ḫɔh, Mehri ḫā, Soqotri ḥe which there even replaced the Proto-Semitic *pay- (mouth), and Biblical Hebrew חוֹחַ (ḥōaḥ, crevice, fissure; bramble, thicket; hole, hiding place).
