From the root ذ ب ب (ḏ b b), from Proto-Semitic *ḏubab-, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ðuṗṗ. Cognate with Akkadian 𒉏 (zubbum) and Hebrew זְבוּב (zəbūb) and Amharic ዝምብ (zəmb).
