Ultimately, as Arabic جَصّ (jaṣṣ, “gypsum”) and Middle Persian gc (gač, “gypsum”) > Persian گچ (gač, “gypsum”), from Akkadian 𒅎𒌓 (IM.BABBAR /gaṣṣu/, “gypsum”).
