Semi-learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܙܝܘܓ (zīwaḡ), from Aramaic [Term?], from a hypothetical Middle Persian [script needed] (*zywk' /⁠zīwag⁠/, mercury), whence also Arabic زِئْبَق (ziʔbaq) and Persian ژیوه (žive), ultimately from Middle Persian [script needed] (zy(w)ndk' /⁠zīndag, zīwandāg, zībandāg⁠/, living).
