From Aramaic חַסָּא (/khassā/), from Akkadian 𒌑𒄭𒄑𒊬 (ḫassū, “lettuce”), from Sumerian 𒄭𒄑𒊬 (ḫi-izsar /hiz/, “lettuce”); cognates with Arabic خَسّ (ḵass), Hebrew חַסָּה (ħassâ), and Maltese ħassa.
