Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac. Of the pattern 12ī3āyā or ܚܲܕ݇ (ḥa, “one”) + -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending); cognate to Arabic وَحِيد (waḥīd) and Hebrew יָחִיד (yakhíd).
