From the active participle of ܡܲܥܢܹܐ (maˁnē) + -ܢܐ (-ānā, the adjectival ending) based off ܥܸܢܝܵܢܵܐ (ˁinyānā, “interest, matter, business”); proposed to be a learned borrowing from Hebrew מְעַנְיֵן (m'anyén).
