ܡܲܦܸܠ • (mappil)

1. (transitive) to drop

   ܡܘܼܦܸܠ ܠܝܼ ܠܲܩܢܹ̈ܐ ܠܐܲܪܥܵܐ ܘܬܒ݂ܝܼܪ ܠܗܘܿܢ.

   mūpil lī laqnē l-arˁā w-tḇīr lhōn.

   I dropped the plates on the ground and they broke.

   ܫܘܼܪܛܵܐ ܩܸܡ ܕܵܒ݂ܹܩ ܠܹܗ ܘܘܵܠܹܐ ܗ݇ܘܵܐ ܕܡܲܦܸܠ ܙܲܝܢܘܼ̈ܗܝ.

   šurṭā qim dāḇēq lēh w-wālē wā d-mappil zaynūh.

   The police arrested him and he had to drop his weapons.

2. (transitive) to knock over, make fall, bring down; destroy, defeat, shoot down

3. (transitive) to abort, miscarry

   Synonyms: ܫܵܐܹܬ (šāˀēt), ܡܪܲܦܹܐ (mrappē)

• When someone has accidentally dropped something by losing his or her grip on it, it is more common to use ܢܵܦܹܠ ܡܸܢ (nāpēl min, literally “to fall from”) rather than ܡܲܦܸܠ (mappil). In that case, the subject denotes the dropped item, and is usually postponed:

  ܩܲܢܝܵܐ ܢܦܝܼܠ ܠܹܗ ܡܸܢܝܼ. ― qanyā npīl lēh minnī ― I (accidentally) dropped the pen. (literally, “The pen fell from me.”)
