Etymology

From a metathesis of the older form ܩܠܝܼܕ݂ܵܐ (qlīḏā), still maintained in some dialects, from Ancient Greek κλεῖδα (kleîda); also borrowed into Turoyo ܩܠܝܕ݂ܐ (qliḏo), Arabic إِقْلِيد (ʔiqlīd), Hebrew קְלִיד (k'lid) and Persian کلید (kelid).
