Inherited from Aramaic תִּשְׁרִין, from Akkadian 𒌗𒌆 (ititašrītu, “beginning”), possibly because the early Arameans regarded autumn as the start of the year or because this month is the start of the second-half of the year from ܢܝܼܣܵܢ (nīsān).
