Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Haṣṭā́, Proto-Indo-Iranian *Haštā́, from Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓw. Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬱𐬙𐬀 (ašta), Persian هشت (hašt), Latvian astoņi, Ancient Greek ὀκτώ (oktṓ), Latin octō, Old English eahta (whence English eight).
