Etymology
Inherited from Prakrit 𑀞𑀡𑁆𑀠 (ṭhaṇḍha, “cold, blunted”), from 𑀞𑀟𑁆𑀠 (ṭhaḍḍha, “sluggish, slow”) with contamination of -ṇ- from a derivative of Proto-Dravidian *taṇ (“cold”), from 𑀣𑀤𑁆𑀥 (thaddha, “firm, fixed”) with retroflexion, from Sanskrit স্তব্ধ (stabdha, “firm, stiff”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stabdʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *stebʰ-tós, with semantic shift. Doublet of ঠাড় (ṭhaṛ, “upright”) and স্তব্ধ (stobdho). Cognate with Odia ଠଣ୍ଡା (ṭhaṇḍā), Bhojpuri ठण्ढा (ṭhaṇḍhā), Kashmiri थंड् (thaṃḍ), Nepali ठण्डा (ṭhaṇḍā), Gujarati ઠંડું (ṭhaṇḍũ), Hindi ठंड (ṭhaṇḍ), Marathi थंड (thaṇḍa).
