Inherited from Prakrit *𑀔𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*khŏtta, “donkey”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), of uncertain origin; possibly related to Sanskrit घोट (ghoṭa, “horse”) (whence ਘੋੜਾ (ghoṛā)).
