ਦਾ
Punjabi
Pronunciation
- (Standard Punjabi) IPA(key): /d̪äː/
- Rhymes: -äː
Etymology 1
Noun
ਦਾ • (dā) m (Shahmukhi spelling دا)
Etymology 2
Possibly derived from Sanskrit कृत (kṛta), through a Prakrit form like Sauraseni 𑀓𑀤 (kada). Turner instead proposes an etymology from Old Punjabi ਸੰਦਾ (sandā, “genitive postposition”), from Sanskrit सन्तक (santaka, “belong to”). Compare Hindi का (kā).
Postposition
ਦਾ • (dā) (Shahmukhi spelling دا)
- (standard) of, belonging to (for masculine object), genitive case postposition
- ਬੱਚੇ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਧ ― baccē dā duddh ― the milk of the child
- Synonyms: ਕਾ (kā), ਨਾ (nā), ਡਾ (ḍā) (dialectal)
