From யாங்கள் (yāṅkaḷ).[1] By surface analysis, என் (eṉ, my) +‎ -கள் (-kaḷ, plural marker). Compare நாங்கள் (nāṅkaḷ, we (exclusive)) with a similar construction.

Cognate with Malayalam എങ്ങൾ (eṅṅaḷ) and Havigannada ಎಂಗಳ (eṅgaḷa).
