Brown derives the term from పడు (paḍu, to fall); on the other hand, it is possibly borrowed from Prakrit 𑀧𑀓𑁆𑀔 (pakkha), from Sanskrit पक्ष (pakṣa, side, flank). Cognate with Kannada ಪಕ್ಕ (pakka), Tamil பக்கம் (pakkam).
