Borrowed from Kannada ಬಯಲು (bayalu); ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *wayal (“open space, field”). Cognate with Tulu ಬಯಿಲ್ (bayilŭ), Malayalam വയൽ (vayal) and Tamil வயல் (vayal).
