ခြင်ဆီ

Burmese

Etymology

Traditionally derived, per MED, from ခြင် (hkrang, bamboo rafter) +‎ ဆီ (hci, oil), referring to the oily marrow found within rafter-like bones.

However, STEDT derives the first syllable from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔkraŋ¹ ~ ʔkyaŋ¹ (marrow), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-kliŋ ~ *r-klyaŋ (marrow, brain), and the second syllable from a provisional Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-ts(y)u(k/ŋ) ~ *g-ts(y)i-k (brain, marrow). For the first syllable, compare Tibetan རྐང (rkang, bone marrow; pith), Old Chinese (OC *kʰreːŋ, *ɡreːŋ, “shinbone of cattle”), (OC *ɡeːŋʔ, *ɡeːŋs, “leg, shank”), (OC *ɡreːŋ, *qreːŋ, “stalk, hilt of sword”). For the second syllable, compare the second syllable of Limbu ni hi (brain).
