ဂၞဴ (gnau, “abdomen, belly”) +‎ အာ (ʼā, “to go”); compare also Burmese ဝမ်းသွား (wam:swa:, “to have loose bowels”) and Thai ท้องเดิน (tɔ́ɔng-dəən, “to have diarrhoea”), both of which have the same construction.
