ဆပ်

Burmese

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /sʰaʔ/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: hcap • ALA-LC: chapʻ • BGN/PCGN: hsat • Okell: hsaʔ

Etymology 1

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *tsap (to repay).

Luce (1981)'s comparison with Old Chinese (OC *tkuːb, “to reply”) is phonetically unconvincing.

  2. to suffer for past misdeeds
Derived terms
  • ကြွေးဆပ် (krwe:hcap)

  • ပေးဆပ် (pe:hcap)
  • အကြွေးဆပ် (a.krwe:hcap)

Etymology 2

From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *tsap (millet). Compare also Nuosu (jyp, millet) and Old Chinese (OC *ʔsleds, “millet”) (Schuessler, 2007: 299).
