Etymology 2
From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *(t)saːy (“to scoop, dip out”); cognate with Jingpho [script needed] (sài, “to scoop out of water; to skim”) (STEDT). Despite phonetic similarity, as well as semantic similarity in the modern day meanings for both terms, Old Chinese 濟 (OC *ʔsliːlʔ, *ʔsliːls, “to help, aid; to ferry”) (adduced by Luce)[1] does not appear to be cognate.
