From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *(t)sum (mortar); cognate with Mizo [Term?] (sûm, mortar) (STEDT). Despite MED grouping the terms together, unclear if related to the "coincide" sense of Etymology 1. If related, perhaps the mortar was seen by Tibeto-Burman tribes as the tool where ingredients met and mashed together.
