Etymology
According to MED, from တံ (tam, “limpidity; liquid”) + တွေး (twe:, “to think, consider”), though STEDT instead considers the second syllable to implicitly be a non-aspirated variant of ထွေး (htwe:, “to spit”), which appears much more semantically reasonable.
