From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-ŋar (“frost, ice”); cognate with Akha [script needed] (ŋɛ́, “ice”) (STEDT). Luce gives Old Chinese 瀼 (OC *njaŋ, “dewy”) as a cognate;[1] this is supported by Coblin.
