Burmese

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /n̥àɴ/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: hnam • ALA-LC: nhaṃ • BGN/PCGN: hnan • Okell: hnañ

Etymology 1

Despite MED grouping the senses together, the "spike of grain" sense is probably not related to the "grasshopper" sense, and is derived by STEDT from a Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-nam (ear, spike of grain). Compare Lahu [Term?] (ɔ³¹ nu³³, ear of grain). Note also similarities to Old Chinese (OC *njaŋ, *njaŋʔ, “stalk of grain”).
