Burmese
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /n̥àɴ/
- Romanization: MLCTS: hnam • ALA-LC: nhaṃ • BGN/PCGN: hnan • Okell: hnañ
Etymology 1
Despite MED grouping the senses together, the "spike of grain" sense is probably not related to the "grasshopper" sense, and is derived by STEDT from a Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-nam (“ear, spike of grain”). Compare Lahu [Term?] (ɔ³¹ nu³³, “ear of grain”). Note also similarities to Old Chinese 穰 (OC *njaŋ, *njaŋʔ, “stalk of grain”).
