The "hold, carry" senses aren't given etymology by STEDT (puik "hold in arms, hug"), but have been often derived from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *bə(q) (“to carry (on back or shoulders)”), and compared with Old Chinese 負 (OC *bɯʔ, “to bear”) and 背 (OC *pɯːɡs, *bɯːɡs, “back”), though the -uik final of the Burmese term makes this comparison tricky and is more suggestive of a Mon loanword.

The "net" sense is similarly not given etymology by STEDT (puik "sweep net, seine"), and is probably also a Mon loanword.
