Etymology
From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *m-ja² (“wife”), a root of limited attestation presumably formed from a reduction of an "m-initial female" term (as in Burmese မေ (me, “term of endearment for a female”)) + an element *ja² of unclear further origin. Cognate with Marma [script needed] (məyá, “wife”) (STEDT).
