Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(b/p)rup (“to overflow, gush, squirt, flood”), which may be related to Proto-Mon-Khmer *(b)ləp (“to immerse”). Compare Tibetan [script needed] (ḥbrubs, “water that has flowed over”) (STEDT), as well as partially Old Chinese 沒 (OC *mɯːd, “to drown, sink”) (Schuessler, 2007).
