Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(b/p)rup (to overflow, gush, squirt, flood), which may be related to Proto-Mon-Khmer *(b)ləp (to immerse). Compare Tibetan [script needed] (ḥbrubs, water that has flowed over) (STEDT), as well as partially Old Chinese (OC *mɯːd, “to drown, sink”) (Schuessler, 2007).
