သပိတ်မှောက်

Burmese

Etymology

သပိတ် (sa.pit, alms bowl) +‎ မှောက် (hmauk, to turn over or upside down), literally upside-down alms bowl.

The verbal "boycott" sense is from a custom where Buddhist monks, while engaging in religious mendicant begging, would turn their alms bowls upside down to refuse donations from people they deemed morally unworthy of blessing.
