MED groups the "stroke, whittle" senses with the "wedge" sense, while STEDT implicitly separates the two and derives the "wedge" sense from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *sap (“wedge”); compare Old Chinese 椄 (OC *ʔseb, “to graft”) (STEDT).

That said, it is possible that the verbal senses are related to the "wedge" sense, a wedge thus being a "whittled piece".
