သားမက်

Burmese

Etymology

သား (sa:, son) + an element မက် (mak) denoting "son-in-law", from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *s-mak, from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *maːk (son-in-law; genitals, penis, vagina; male); compare Mizo mak-pa (son-in-law). The traditional comparison with Old Chinese (OC *mɯwʔ, “male”) is phonetically unsound, and the Chinese term is more likely an Austroasiatic loan (STEDT).
