Cognate with Bwe Karen , Pa'o Karen ဟူ (). Luce (1985) suggests that ဟု may be borrowed from Austroasiatic, probably from a descendant of Proto-Austroasiatic *srɔ(ː)ʔ; compare, for example, Mon သွံ (paddy).
