From အ- (a.-, nominal prefix) + a component ငူ (ngu, to project convexly). Said sense is not listed on the entry for ငူ (ngu) by MED, while STEDT doesn't give etymology (ə-ŋu "promontory, projection", ŋu "project convexly"), and Luce 1981 appears to adduce Old Chinese (OC *ŋeːw, “lofty, high”).
