Borrowed from Pali ārammaṇa (“support, help; condition, cause; basis for the working of the mind and intellect, e.g. sense”), itself related to Sanskrit आलम्बन (ālambana, “base, support”), albeit with semantic conflation from the root रम्भ् (rambh, “to grasp”).
