Noun

ᄒᆞᆸ서체 (hawpseoche)

  1. (linguistics, rare) The formal, polite speech level in Jeju.

Usage notes

ᄒᆞᆸ서체 is a speech level used among strangers, speeches, interviews, by TV announcers, and to customers. It is generally considered slightly less formal than the Korean equivalent 하십시오체 (hasipsioche).

Jeju words inflected in this speech level are commonly characterized by the endings -으우다 (-euuda) or -읍네다 (-eumneda) in declarative statements, -으우꽈 (-euukkwa) or -읍네까 (-eumnekka) in questions, -읍서 (-eupseo) in the imperative, and in -읍주 (-eupju) in the propositive. E.g.:

  • ᄒᆞᆸ서 (hawpseo): "do" (command)
  • ᄒᆞᆸ주 (hawpju): "Let's do!"
